I wanted to share this small update with you as this past weekend marked two years since the escalation of the war in Ukraine. Omega 365's generous support has been invaluable for us and instrumental in helping our response since day one. Thank you for your continued partnership.
It has now been two years since the escalation of the war in Ukraine. Since 24 February 2022, more than 10 million people have been driven from their homes, and almost 1.5 million houses and apartments have been destroyed. Over the past two years, we have helped provide homes for almost 320,000 people in Ukraine and neighboring countries, and ensured that almost 1.3 million Ukrainians have received vital help. Without the support from private sector partners like yourself, we would never have been able to reach as many people.
According to a recent NRC survey, almost half of people surveyed in the east and south of Ukraine report their houses have been damaged or destroyed. Despite the war, the death and the destruction, many Ukrainians want to remain living in or to move back to their bombed-out towns and villages. Our colleagues on the ground have recently spoken to Valentyna and her husband who had a miraculous escape when an explosive landed outside their house. The explosion blew out all the windows and destroyed the roof. Valentyna was inside the house but emerged from the incident uninjured. NRC has helped the couple repair their damaged house. This includes providing cash to pay for new windows and a new roof in order to make the house habitable again.
