Marine Mammal Observation Officer

Location: GUYANA

Contract Period: 5 months (Commencing May 2023)

Job Summary:

You will be part of a dynamic and ambitious project team that stands for corporate environmental responsibility. You are involved in the Gas-to-Energy Project in Guyana to support the Social and Environmental Team in the observation of Marine Mammals, turtles and protected species during the execution of the project. 


  • Conduct visual watch for Marine fauna, such as marine mammals, turtles and protected species onboard of one of our vessels
  • Writing reports on any marine mammal, turtle, or protected species sightings
  • Maintain a logbook of all sightings
  • Ensuring that vessels maintain appropriate distance and speed
  • And instruct personnel with regards to behavior around marine mammals, turtles, and protected species


  • Higher education degree in an area related to marine biology/ecology, nature conservation or equivalent
  • Preferably minimum of 1-3 years’ experience is preferable in marine works or marine mammal-, turtle- or protected species observation or conservation
  • Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) Marine Mammal Observer Mitigation training, and/or Protected Species Observer (PSO) certificate and/or experience preferable
  • Valid BOSIET or STCW Sea Survival Training Certificate preferable
  • Excellent command of the English, both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge about marine mammal, turtle and protected species present in Guyana
  • Willing to perform rotational work, including weekends & public holidays (i.e. 4 weeks work, followed by 4 weeks leave)
  • Ability to cope with working at sea with changing weather conditions, and noisy environments
  • Affinity with marine construction/oil & gas projects
  • Well-organized team player that can also work independently
  • Flexible mindset, being able to function in multi-disciplinary teams
