Civil Engineer

Assignment Description

This position formally reports to the Manager, Development and Discipline Engineering but will take direction from specific Project Engineers and Managers as part of a matrix organization. 
 Responsibilities May include:
 •       Participating in development of project premises.
 •       Advising team on civil and structural engineering matters.
 •       Participating in the development of the Basis of Design [BOD]. 
 •       Participating in the evaluation of new or unproven technology.
 •       Participating in development of site layouts and access requirements.
 •       Gathering and interpreting geotechnical and environmental data to assess impact on          design basis.
 •       Reviewing the process design package & preliminary equipment list.  
 •       Participating in evaluation of contractor(s) design capabilities.
 •       Interfacing with in-house and contractor design team activities.
 •       Providing oversight of and interfacing with contractor(s) civil and structural                      Engineering design activities.
 •       Assuring compliance with International & Australian standards for civil and structural           engineering.
 •       Maintaining progress, integrity, quality, and accuracy of civil and structural                         engineering design work. 
 •       Participating in the preparation & review of preliminary environmental permitting               plan. 
 •       Advising the project management team on correct civil and structural engineering               design procedures and specifications. 
 •       Participating in the Process Hazard Analysis process. 
 •       Overseeing development and maintenance of weight control report, as applicable.
 •       Reviewing specifications for civil and structural engineering materials. 
 •       Participates in preparation & submittal of regulatory permits.
 •       Implements project documentation and data preservation routines for civil and                  structural engineering activities. 
 •       Controlling schedule and cost of assigned object(s). 
 •       Participating on start-up team consulting on civil and structural engineering                      questions and interfacing with in-house and contractor design team activities.
 •       Maintaining full project chronology of civil and structural engineering design                      revisions (including cause / effect data), for use in agreeing contract change orders           or defending spurious claims.

Qualifications Required


  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering
  • 5+ years of engineering experience related to the Oil & Gas Industry
  • Accepts HSE ownership & accountability.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, planning, and organizational skills.  
  • Influence management and interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong communication - both written & oral presentation skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Working knowledge of ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360


  • 10+ years of engineering experience related to the Oil & Gas Industry
  • Professional engineering licensure
  • Experience/familiarity with GIS
     Experience with contract management/administration
  • Experience with order of magnitude cost estimating
  • Working knowledge of the following:
    1. Site development (surveying, clearing, cut, fill, blasting, compaction, slope stability)
    2. Drainage (ditches, canals, culverts, erosion protection)
    3. Containment (berms, dikes, levees, basins, liners)
    4. Roads and Pads (sub-base, base course, surface course, geometry)
    5. Structural steel (analysis, design, fabrication, erection)
    6. Structural concrete (analysis, design, construction)
    7. Short span bridges (loads, foundations, superstructures)
    8. Shallow foundations (footings, mats, ring walls, piers)
    9. Deep foundations (driven piles, helical piles, drilled shafts)
    10. Buildings (modular, pre-engineered, site constructed, blast resistant)
    11. Codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE, AWS, NFPA, API, IBC, AASHTO)
  • Working knowledge of the following:
    1. Process structures and equipment support structures
    2. Pipe racks
    3. Precast concrete
    4. Equipment foundations (compressors, pumps, tanks, heat exchangers, reactors, separators, towers, flares, boilers)
    5. Procurement practices
    6. Heavy haul and lift practices
    7. Construction practices including safety, equipment, & productivity
    8. Regulatory support experience (permitting, pollution prevention and control plans)
